Some Reflection on Interspection

There is so much ugly in our minds that comes out when we are left alone. Introspection is a gateway to recognition of our own faults and the evils of our ideas, including self depreciation, which is probably why most people avoid it at all costs.

In her poem "Again, the Body", Lucia Perillo begins her poem with a similar yet much more eloquent comment on introspection. Like all inward looking, the poem quickly spirals into a downward spiral of increasingly convoluted and macabre images. By the end of the poem, Perillo has gone from speaking on self reflection to cannibalism.

I loved this poem so much, probably because it reminded me a lot of my own writing, which is discouraging because I guess I'm prone to narcissism. Her tone is dark and her descriptions gory, intimate, and disturbing, which are all things I strive for. The writing also becomes almost reminiscent of stream of consciousness, which I find natural and easy with my long, winding sentences that are joined together by lots and lots of commas and semicolons. I really want to try my hand at poetry again; if she can write something of this quality, why can't I?
